NAIFA CEO: Court Decision on DOL Shows that Advocacy Matters

Final judgement on the Department of Labor's Biden-era fiduciary-only rule.

March 17, 2026 | NAIFA National |
A federal court today issued a final judgment in the lawsuit NAIFA filed along with the American Council of Life Insurers, NAIFA-Texas, several other NAIFA chapters, and others that opposed the Department of Labor's Biden-era fiduciary-only rule.

The decision brings our suit to a successful conclusion. NAIFA has been in this fight from the beginning. We played a leading role in opposing DOL's 2016 Fiduciary Rule and ultimately helped secure its defeat in federal court. In 2018, ACLI, NAIFA, NAIFA-Texas, and NAIFA Texas chapters won a landmark case in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which vacated the rule. The decision once again demonstrated NAIFA’s effectiveness as a leading advocate for financial professionals and the clients they serve. Today's decision adds to that tradition of advocacy success.
